I view psychotherapy as a way of reaching intellectual, emotional, and spiritual balance. Through uncovering the barriers that prevent us from reaching our potential we can become our true self. Psychotherapy allows us to gain insight into a better understanding of ourselves and others, teach us how to deal with and express emotions. It is a process that can enable us to learn new, more constructive ways of dealing with difficulties, and more enjoyable ways of relating to others and ourselves. My psychodynamic and psychoanalytic orientations give me a deeper understanding of dynamics of my patients' problems. In a supportive and comfortable atmosphere I work towards helping them to gain control of their life, become aware of the cause of the problem, and find a way to change, accept or see things in different perspective.

I specialize in treatment of PTSD, complex/developmental trauma, and immigration trauma. In my work I incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. EMDR is a method of deep and accelerated processing of material (painful thoughts, feelings, experiences caused by past, present, or future) that may be inaccessible in traditional talk therapy. EMDR has been proven to be especially effective to treat trauma, addiction, and anxiety disorders.

I provide reports and other documentation necessary to assist my patients in receiving compensation (law suits) and in legal proceedings such as: no fault insurance, U-visa, divorce, domestic violence survivors, victims of traumatic experiences (i.e. accidents, assaults, attacks.) I have 16 years of experience working with Family, Criminal, and Immigration Courts.

I am a master's level psychologist and a licensed psychotherapist working and living in New York. Psychotherapy and self-growth are passions that accompanied my personal and professional life-path for the last 20 years.

I received bachelor and master’s degrees in clinical psychology from John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with GPA 4.0. I continued to develop my clinical skills at Fordham University, Long Island University, John Jay College, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, postgraduate program, where I received a Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. I completed extensive training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing treatment (levels 1,2,3). I am also a NYS Credentialed Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Gambling Counselor, and NYS Licensed Mental Health Counselor.

I started my clinical practice in an outpatient substance abuse clinic in Brooklyn that focused on cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approach in helping individuals suffering from addiction and co-dependency. Subsequently I worked in an outpatient mental health clinic in Manhattan that specializes in psychotherapy of posttraumatic stress disorder and related mood disorders in psychoanalytic approach. Currently I maintain a full-time private practice, I am a founder and director of Katarzyna Dlugosz Mental Health Counseling, PLLC.
